Fairfax officials want shelter plan for pets

FAIRFAX, Va. Officials in Fairfax County are seeking a federal grant to come up with a plan to shelter pets during regional disasters. The county's board of supervisors has asked the Department of Homeland Security for 200-thousand dollars to study how other communities care for pets during natural disasters or other catastrophic events. The Washington Post reports that the money could be used to develop a plan to evacuate and care for dogs, cats and other household pets if disasters or acts of terrorism occur. The Fairfax County Police Department's Animal Services Division wants to use the grant to hire a consultant to develop a regional pet protection plan. __ Information from: The Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ Copyright 2007 The Associated Press.
